Roger Pikia farewelled after more than 15 years of service to the Waikato River Authority
Long-serving Waikato River Authority Board member Roger Pikia bid farewell to the Authority at a board meeting yesterday, where discussions were held on the review of Te Ture Whaimana.
Mr Pikia has formally advised the Board of his intention to retire, concluding more than 15 years of service to the restoration and protection of the Waikato and Waipā Rivers.
He is the only remaining inaugural appointee still serving since the Authority’s establishment in 2010, following the Waikato-Tainui Raupatu Claims (Waikato River) Settlement.
As the Te Arawa River Iwi Trust representative, his contribution spans both the Authority and its precursor governance arrangements, including the Guardians Establishment Committee from 2008.
Over that time, Mr Pikia held several key leadership roles, including Deputy Co-Chair, Co-Chair, and, most recently, as a long-serving Board member. He also served as inaugural Chair of the Investment Committee, helping establish the Authority’s perpetual investment fund, now valued at more than $115 million.
Reflecting on his time, Mr Pikia said it had been a privilege to serve.
“This kaupapa is much bigger than any individual, and I am grateful for those I have served with and worked alongside. I am proud to leave the Authority knowing it is in great hands and heading in the right direction. The kaupapa of the awa never leaves you.”
He was presented with a carved hoe, named Kia hora te marino, by Waikato River Authority Co-Chair Danny Loughlin and Waikato-Tainui Board member Jackie Colliar.
Waikato River Authority Iwi Co-Chair Danny Loughlin acknowledged his longstanding contribution.
“You are the longest-serving member and have seen significant change over that time; you have done the hard yards. I admire your business acumen, your knowledge and networks, and your steady hand.”
Waikato River Authority Crown Co-Chair Stu Kneebone acknowledged his leadership and legacy.
“We acknowledge your leadership and the investment fund you helped establish, a legacy that will benefit the river for generations.”
Evelyn Forrest will take up the role as the Te Arawa River Iwi Trust representative on the Authority, commencing at the April Board meeting.
